Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Why Mid-City Residents Choose Us for Gelco Service
Alvin Abbott grew up a few blocks from Rancho Park Golf Course and has spent most of his adult life working the same Westside zip codes, including Mid-City. He learned building systems at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, then apprenticed under a veteran sweep and never looked back. Two decades later, he’s the guy neighbors call when a home inspector flags something vague on a West Adams bungalow and they need a real answer before escrow closes.
That matters when you’re dealing with Gelco parts. We’ve rebuilt and re-fit Gelco top-sealing dampers and caps across hundreds of Mid-City chimneys, enough reps to know how a Gelco assembly behaves after decades of coastal damp. We’re an independent Gelco service provider, not authorized, sponsored, or endorsed by Gelco, which means we tell you what’s actually in there and what your options are.
We also stock the parts that keep Mid-City jobs moving. Genuine Gelco replacement dampers and caps where the model is still supported, and quality aftermarket gaskets, springs, and stainless hardware when OEM pieces are discontinued. You’ll always know which you’re getting before we start.
Our Gelco sales & service work is one of three things we do under one roof: chimney sweeping, chimney repair, and dryer vent cleaning. No subcontractors, no handyman drift.

Common Gelco Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Mid-City
- Top-sealing damper gaskets and springs seized or torn. Mid-City’s morning marine layer pushes damp air inland most days, and when a fireplace sits unused for months, that humidity settles into the damper assembly. Gaskets tear, springs seize, and the lid stops sealing, letting cold damp air leak down the flue. We re-fit the assembly or replace the damper, depending on what the model still supports.
- Pitted stainless Gelco caps with loosened mounting legs. On tall, slender 1920s stucco chimneys along West Adams and Arlington Heights, a moderate quake can loosen cap legs just enough to let rain into the clay tile below. Stainless pits from years of coastal air, and once the seal breaks, water starts spalling the tile. We pull the cap, inspect the crown and flue, and re-set or replace the cap on a sound base.
- Rusted multi-flue chase covers on shared chimney stacks. The 1950s and 60s dingbats and low-rise apartments in 90016 often share a single multi-flue chimney. Chase covers rust through at the seams, pond water, and that water works its way into the original clay tile. We fit new Gelco-compatible multi-flue caps or chase covers and address the liner damage below.
- Corroded damper frames on converted gas fireplaces. Many of Mid-City’s older fireplaces were originally wood-burning and are now decorative or vented gas. The Gelco damper frame sits in that transition, often corroding and sticking open or shut. The fireplace drafts badly, or can’t be closed off when unused. We rebuild or replace the frame and get the assembly working like it should.
- Cracked crowns hiding under a Gelco cap. We pull caps for a sweep and regularly find crown damage no one knew about. Mid-City’s clay flue liners have spent a century absorbing marine-layer moisture and quake shaking, and cracks at the crown are often the first sign. We rebuild and coat the crown instead of just patching it.
Gelco Service in Mid-City: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Mid-City’s 90016 housing stock is dense with 1910s to 1930s bungalows and Spanish Revival homes, nearly all with tall stucco chimneys and original clay tile flues. Those flues have spent a century absorbing coastal damp every morning and shaking during every moderate temblor. What that means for Gelco owners specifically is this: the damper and cap aren’t just accessories. They’re the first line of defense for a clay flue that’s already stressed, and when they fail, the damage compounds fast.
After any moderate earthquake, we get a wave of calls from Mid-City for cracked crowns and separated flue tiles. Homeowners rarely notice until a Gelco cap is pulled for a sweep or inspection. That’s exactly what happened on a Spanish Revival bungalow off West Adams: our tech pulled a pitted Gelco single-flue cap to find the crown cracked and two clay flue tiles separated from the quake shaking. The owner had only called about a drafty fireplace. We re-seated the tiles, re-parged the liner, rebuilt and coated the crown, and set a new stainless Gelco cap so the flue finally sealed against the marine-layer damp.
That’s the difference between a sweep and an inspection in Mid-City. Most calls here are not routine creosote sweeps. They’re parging cracked liners, re-seating loosened crowns, and catching quake damage before water finishes the job.
Gelco Models & Products We Service in Mid-City
We work on the Gelco product lines that show up again and again in Mid-City’s older fireplaces. Top-sealing dampers, the spring-loaded energy-saving style that should close tight when the fireplace is cold. Stainless single-flue chimney caps that sit on top of those slender stucco chimneys. Multi-flue chase covers and caps on shared apartment stacks. And Gelco fireplace glass door sets on older wood-burning fireboxes.
When a Gelco part is still in production, we fit the genuine replacement. When it’s discontinued, we use quality aftermarket gaskets, springs, and stainless hardware, and we tell you which you’re getting before we quote. On a century-old clay flue, we repair or reline before we recommend ripping out a serviceable Gelco cap or damper, and I’ll tell you what’s actually in there, then you decide.

FAQs – Gelco Chimney Cleaning in Mid-City
My Gelco top-sealing damper won’t close all the way on my West Adams bungalow – is that the damper or the flue?
It could be either. A damper that won’t close is usually a seized spring or torn gasket from years of marine-layer damp, but we’ve also seen separated flue tiles blocking the damper plate after quake shaking. We pull the assembly and camera the flue to know for sure. Call (877) 326-6276 for a free inspection and we’ll show you what’s actually in there.
Does a cracked chimney crown on my 1920s Mid-City stucco chimney mean I need a full rebuild?
Not usually. Most cracked crowns on Mid-City’s older chimneys can be rebuilt and coated, especially if the flue tiles are still seated. A full rebuild is only called for when the masonry itself is structurally compromised, and we’ll tell you plainly if that’s the case. We’d rather repair a serviceable chimney than replace one that doesn’t need it.
Is my pitted Gelco stainless cap worth keeping, or should it be replaced?
Surface pitting on stainless is cosmetic and the cap still functions. But if the mounting legs are loose, the screen is torn, or water is getting past the seal, replacement is the honest answer. On Mid-City’s tall stucco chimneys, a loose cap invites rain straight into the clay tile, and that accelerates spalling fast. We’ll set a new stainless Gelco cap on a sound crown and you’ll be sealed for another decade.
My fireplace is now vented gas with a Gelco damper – do I still need a sweep?
Yes, but the reason is different than a wood-burning fireplace. Gas fireplaces produce less creosote, but the flue still collects dust, debris, and sometimes bird nests, and the damper frame corrodes over time from condensation. A sweep and damper check every couple years keeps the system drafting properly and prevents the damper from sticking open or shut.
After the last earthquake, how do I know if my Mid-City chimney was damaged?
You often won’t know from the ground. Cracked crowns and separated flue tiles hide under the cap, and the first sign is usually water staining near the fireplace or a draft that wasn’t there before. The only way to verify is to pull the cap and camera the flue. Call (877) 326-6276 and we’ll inspect it before the burn season, not after the damage spreads.
